It is a non-invasive prenatal test that allows detection of the most common fetal chromosomal abnormalities<\/strong>. Only a blood sample from the mother is needed to analyze the DNA from the placenta.<\/p>\n

Procedure<\/strong><\/h2>\n

During pregnancy, DNA from the baby circulates in the mother’s bloodstream. Enormous advances in the field of genetics allow us for the first time to detect this fetal DNA in the mother’s blood and to access genetic information about the baby’s chromosomes.<\/p>\n

Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, a total of 46 (two copies of each pair). The first 22 pairs are numbered from 1 to 22. The last pair determines the sex. Girls have two X chromosomes and boys have one X and one Y chromosome. Health and developmental problems occur when either chromosome is missing or extra.<\/p>\n

The technique is as simple as drawing some blood from the mother when she is at least 10 weeks pregnant. This sample is analyzed and the results are received within 3-4 days.<\/p>\n

  • Sex chromosome analysis not only provides information on fetal sex<\/strong>, but also detects pathologies such as Turner’s syndrome (X monosomy) or Klinefelter’s syndrome (extra X chromosome, XXY).<\/li>\n
  • Unlike other prenatal diagnostic tests, this test carries no risk<\/strong> to either the mother or the fetus.<\/li>\n
  • It is an accurate technique<\/strong>, with detection rates of up to 99%, and false positive rates of less than 0.1% for the detection of trisomies 21 and 18.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • High risk: your medical team will analyze your case and advise you to undergo an invasive prenatal diagnostic test<\/strong> to confirm the diagnosis (usually amniocentesis).<\/li>\n

      • You have other risk factors for fetal chromosomal abnormality.<\/li>\n
      • You have had a previous pregnancy with alteration.<\/li>\n
      • You have a history of first trimester abortions.<\/li>\n
      • You have undergone in vitro fertilization treatment with preimplantation genetic diagnosis.<\/li>\n
