What is a 4D ultrasound?

Classic 2D ultrasounds are images that show slices or sections of the fetus in one plane. By combining many of these 2D images, a detailed reconstruction of the surface of the fetus can be made, resulting in a 3D image.

4D ultrasound is a non-invasive technique by which, by means of ultrasound and without any risk for the baby or the mother, we can see the baby moving in three dimensions in real time. In other words, the “time” dimension is included in these ultrasound scans.

This type of ultrasound, also known as “emotional ultrasound”, is performed with diagnostic equipment, and is focused on showing the baby’s features and gestures inside the womb. In other words, these ultrasound scans do not replace the recommended diagnostic ultrasound scans during follow-up.

When can 4D ultrasound be performed?

4D ultrasounds can be performed between 10 and 30 weeks of pregnancy, although the features are not fully visible before 22-24 weeks of gestation. The quality of the images depends mainly on the amount of amniotic fluid that surrounds the baby, since it is the medium that transmits the ultrasound waves that will form the image, so it is not recommended to perform this type of ultrasound after the 30th week.

Other factors that may also affect this type of imaging are the position of the baby and maternal abdominal fat.

What happens if you don’t let it show?

In some cases, the position of the fetus does not allow to see the facial features easily, but in those cases, we will come back to you another day to get the best profile of the fetus. And of course at no additional cost.
